If you love sports and have a knack for communicating theoretical and practical instruction about them, coaching may a good job choice for you. Or, if you can spot talent, scouting might be up your alley. Predicted to grow at 6% over by 2024, there will be almost 15 thousand new coaching and/or scouting jobs created. These fields aren’t large in terms of numbers, but with the right skill set and training a job in coaching or scouting could be the way to continue engagement in sports and communicate your knowledge and skills to other athletes. The average annual salary of coaches is a modest 31 thousand dollars. However, as one moves into higher levels of coaching, salary increases.

Coaches teach amateur and professional athletes the principles, strategies and skills needed for a given sport or athletic event. Scouts evaluate talent and determine the likelihood of athletes succeeding at higher levels of competition such as college and/or professional levels.

Both coaches and scouts generally need a bachelor’s degree along with extensive knowledge of their sport. It is typical for coaches to work more than 40 hours per week, on holidays and weekends. A great deal of travel is normal for coaches and scouts as they travel to different locations for events. Often experience in the sport one desires to coach is beneficial, but it is not always necessary, especially at the lower levels. Coaches are often employed by schools with athletic teams as well as professional sports organizations.
